Multistate AG Coalition Settles with Walmart for $3.1 Billion over Opioid Allegations

  • A group of 16 AGs reached a settlement with Walmart Inc., pending approval by the full coalition of 43 states, to resolve allegations regarding the company’s role in contributing to the nationwide opioid crisis.
  • The settlement resolves allegations that Walmart pharmacies distributed and dispensed prescription opioid pain medication improperly.
  • Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Walmart will pay up to $3.1 billion to the states, local governments, and tribes that sign on to the agreement. In addition, Walmart will implement and maintain a controlled substance compliance program to identify suspicious prescriptions and prevent fraudulent prescriptions from being filled at its stores, among other requirements.
  • Previously, Florida AG Ashley Moody separately reached a settlement agreement with Walmart to resolve the same allegations, which we previously wrote about here.
