On Friday, March 8, 2013, the US Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) released a new version of Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. This revised form contains expanded instructions. The form also has some new features including new fields and a new format to hopefully reduce errors. Employers should begin using the new form now; however, the previously accepted versions (Rev. 02/02/09N and Rev. 08/07/09Y) may be used until May 7, 2013. After May 7, 2013, those versions will not be accepted and all employers should be using the newest version of the form.

The new form is available via the USCIS website here. The USCIS has also updated the Handbook for Employers, Guidance for Completing the Form I-9 (M-274), which is also available via the USCIS website in the I-9 Central section of the website.

DISCLAIMER: Because of the generality of this update, the information provided herein may not be applicable in all situations and should not be acted upon without specific legal advice based on particular situations.
