What Caused the Cadence Bank Data Breach?

The Cadence Bank data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, PRN’s website notice provides some important information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, on June 1, 2023, Cadence Bank learned of a previously unknown vulnerability affecting MOVEit, a file transfer application developed by Progress Software.

In response, Cadence Bank installed all patches to mitigate any impact of the vulnerability. Additionally, Cadence Bank launched an investigation into the incident with the help of outside cybersecurity experts.

On June 28, 2023, the Cadence Bank investigation concluded that an unauthorized exploited the MOVEit vulnerability, at which point they accessed and downloaded information that was stored within the MOVEit application between May 28, 2023 and May 31, 2023. Cadence Bank then notified PRN on September 7, 2023.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Cadence Bank and Pathology Resource Network reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, driver’s license number, health insurance information, medical information, treatment information, billing and claims information, and financial account information.

On October 27, 2023, Pathology Resource Network sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
