Helpful Privacy Tips When Working from Home

If you are working from home more often, you are likely eating from home more often. Online ordering of takeout food from Uber, Grubhub, DoorDash and the rest is up dramatically. Some may also be increasing their purchases of meal kits from companies such as Sun Basket, Splendid Spoon, Gobble, Yumble, Purple Carrot, Daily Harvest, and others. These businesses allow you to “[e]ffortlessly create and plate your meals in no time.” No matter how pedestrian that activity may seem, remember that any organization with your personal information is a security risk.

For example, on Wednesday, May 20, meal kit delivery service Home Chef disclosed a data breach that affected customer information, including email addresses, names and phone numbers, encrypted passwords, the last four digits of credit card numbers, frequency of deliveries, and mailing addresses. Information security and technology news publication BleepingComputer reported that Home Chef database information had been offered for sale on the dark web for $2500. While Home Chef has not disclosed the number of affected customers, BleepingComputer has estimated 8 million user records are involved. Home Chef is recommending customers reset their passwords “in an abundance of caution.”

Whether you are transferring funds; supplementing your medical records; purchasing a gift off Amazon; or simply ordering  paleo, gluten-free, pescatarian, vegetarian, vegan, carb-conscious, Mediterranean, quick and easy, diabetes-friendly, lean and clean, or oven-ready meal kits, practice good cyber hygiene, which includes using different and complex passwords across different accounts.
