California draft offshore wind plan addresses infrastructure, floating platform challenges

The California Energy Commission (CEC) last Friday released a draft strategic plan for offshore wind development, which estimates a potential generation capacity of up to 59.6 GW off the state’s coast and lays out strategies for maximizing that potential. The draft plan was completed in accordance with a 2021 bill passed by the California legislature.

Tribes, environmental groups ask federal court to block $10B energy transmission project in Arizona

A federal judge is being asked to issue a stop-work order on a $10 billion transmission line being built through a remote Arizona valley to carry wind-generated electricity to customers as far away as California. A lawsuit filed on January 17 in U.S. District Court in Tucson, Arizona, accuses the U.S. Interior Department and Bureau of Land Management of refusing for nearly 15 years to recognize “overwhelming evidence of the cultural significance” of the remote San Pedro Valley to various Native American tribes.


The Pentagon will install rooftop solar panels as Biden pushes clean energy in federal buildings

The Defense Department will install solar panels on the Pentagon, part of the Biden administration’s plan to promote clean energy and “reestablish the federal government as a sustainability leader.” The Pentagon is one of 31 government sites that are receiving $104 million in Energy Department grants that are expected to double the amount of carbon-free electricity at federal facilities and create 27 MW of clean-energy capacity while leveraging more than $361 million in private investment, the Energy Department said.

Solar, storage projects of 3 GW move forward in Western U.S.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on Wednesday announced milestones for several large-scale renewable energy projects in the Western U.S., including the 44 MW Camino solar project in Kern County, California, that will add a combined 1.7 GW of solar and 1.3 GW of battery storage capacity. BLM is currently processing 67 utility-scale onshore clean energy projects proposed on public lands in the Western U.S. with a combined capacity exceeding 37 GW.


Ardagh Glass California facility taps into solar energy

The Ardagh Glass Packaging-North America business unit of Ireland’s Ardagh Group is working with CI Renewables LLC to move forward with plans for a solar energy project in Madera, California, where Ardagh has a glass wine bottle manufacturing plant. The 10 MW solar project, being built and to be operated by VALTA Energy, is expected to be completed later this year.


Ørsted signs 80 MW solar PV PPA with Bloomberg in Texas

Bullet PV-Tech – January 22

Danish renewables developer Ørsted has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply 80 MW of solar PV power to media company Bloomberg. Currently under construction, the 471 MW Mockingbird Solar Centre, located near Paris, Texas, will supply the power for the PPA. Ørsted said the project is the largest solar project in its portfolio in the U.S.


Enel builds 2.7 MW solar + storage project at Bayer research site in California

Bullet Solar Power World – January 23

Enel North America completed a 2.7 MW solar and 1 MW/2 MWh energy storage system at Bayer’s vegetable research and development site in Woodland, California. Located in a region historically prone to rolling blackouts and grid disruptions, the solar + storage system is expected to generate approximately 5,100 MWh of renewable energy each year, enough to cover about 70% of the Woodland site’s energy needs.
