This Week in New York – Council Passes New Bills Related to Commercial Spaces, Ballot Proposals Receive Mixed Support from Elected Officials, Jamie Ansorge Named to 40 Under 40 List & Election Day Reception Invitation
Single-occupancy Restroom Rights & Carbon Monoxide Detector Requirements
On Wednesday at a stated meeting, the New York City Council passed two pieces of legislation relating to single-occupancy restrooms and carbon monoxide detectors in commercial spaces. Intro. 465will require the New York City Department of Buildings, in partnership with other city agencies, to provide business owners and the general public education and outreach materials about the city's single-occupancy restroom requirements in commercial establishments. The legislation intends to inform the general public about their right to a single-occupancy restroom regardless of their gender, and seeks to ensure that business owners are complying with the law. Intro. 644 will require the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in all commercial spaces required to have a fire alarm system. These bills have been sent to Mayor Bill de Blasio's desk for final approval.
Mayor’s Charter Review Ballot Proposals Receive Mixed Support
Next week on Election Day, New York City voters will decide three ballot measures proposed by the Mayor's Charter Revision Commission. Mayor de Blasio spent the week advocating in support of the three proposals, while some elected officials notably voiced their opposition. Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer all oppose questions 2 and 3, related to civic engagement and community boards. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams supports questions 2 and 3, but opposes question 1 to change to campaign finance rules, and Staten Island Borough President James Oddo opposes all three.
