Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • Washington is deciding how to respond to Iran’s major Saturday attack on Israel, after the United States and other allies helped Israel prevent significant casualties or damage.
  • President Joe Biden will host Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’a Al-Sudani for a bilateral meeting, followed by another bilateral with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala.
  • Biden will spend several days traveling across Pennsylvania for campaign events.

HOUSE

  • The House will floor votes tonight through Thursday taking up legislation supporting Israel and condemning Iran, but leaders are still deciding which bills to move forward.
  • A busy week of testimony for the president’s cabinet includes Trade Representative Katherine Tai at the Ways and Means Committee, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra at the Energy and Commerce Committee, and Labor Secretary Julie Su, among others, at the Appropriations Committee.
  • The Energy and Commerce Innovation, Data, and Commerce Subcommittee on Wednesday will review major bipartisan data privacy legislation.

SENATE

  • The Senate will be in session throughout the week, taking up House-passed legislation to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, and potentially the House’s articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
  • The cabinet will also make numerous appearances in Senate committees this week, including Becerra, Tai, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, among others.
  • The Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Investigations Subcommittee subpoenaed Boeing CEO David Calhoun to testify Wednesday regarding safety-related allegations from a whistleblower.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Biden will hold separate bilateral meetings today with both Al-Sudani and Fiala.
  • Biden will spend the rest of the week in Pennsylvania, beginning tomorrow in his hometown of Scranton.
  • He will also travel to Pittsburgh Wednesday and Philadelphia Thursday, recognizing the Keystone State will play a key role in deciding this year’s presidential election.
