Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • The 2024 presidential election is officially underway with Donald Trump’s victory in the Iowa Republican caucuses.
  • Snow closed the federal government and is disrupting travel to Washington as lawmakers return to vote on a bipartisan agreement to extend government funding before Friday’s deadline.
  • President Joe Biden will meet with the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

HOUSE

  • The House canceled votes today and now will be in session tomorrow through Friday, planning votes to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress, as well as legislation to fund the government until early March.
  • The Transportation Committee will hold a hearing tomorrow on “The State of Transportation.”
  • Also tomorrow, the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a hearing titled “Examining the Flow of U.S. Money into China’s Military Might.”

SENATE

  • The Senate is scheduled to resume floor votes this evening, also taking up the funding extension to keep the government open.
  • The top tax writers in each chamber announced an agreement on legislation to boost the Child Tax Credit and three business tax breaks.
  • Tomorrow, the Foreign Relations Committee will receive a closed briefing on the strategic implications of Taiwan’s election.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Trump won yesterday’s Iowa caucuses, as expected, with attention immediately turning to New Hampshire’s primary one week from today.
  • President Joe Biden has little on his public schedule this week after returning from Philadelphia, where he observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day by volunteering at a food bank.
  • Biden on Friday will meet with mayors in town for the U.S. Conference of Mayors 92nd Winter Meeting.
