Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.
HEADLINES
- Former President Donald Trump will be arraigned tomorrow in Miami on charges related to his handling of classified documents – the first federal indictment of a former president.
- House Republicans are hoping to move forward on anti-regulation messaging legislation that was derailed last week by a conservative revolt.
- President Joe Biden has a busy week, including a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, plus travel to Philadelphia and Connecticut.
HOUSE
- The House will vote tonight through Thursday, taking up bills targeting federal regulation of gas stoves, after conservatives last week voted down the Republican legislation in retaliation for Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s debt limit deal with Biden.
- The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee tomorrow will take up its reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration.
- The Armed Services Committee this week will begin consideration of the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act.

SENATE
- The Senate will be in session throughout the week, continuing to vote on Biden nominees.
- The Senate Judiciary Committee tomorrow will hold a hearing on the government’s surveillance authorities under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, with officials from throughout the intelligence community.
- Also tomorrow, the Senate Banking Committee will review the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Semi-Annual Report to Congress with Director Rohit Chopra.

WHITE HOUSE
- Today, Biden will host a celebration of college athletes, then meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
- Tomorrow, the White House will hold a Juneteenth concert on the South Lawn.
- Late in the week, Biden will travel to Connecticut and Philadelphia.
