Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • Returning from the Fourth of July, Congress begins a busy three-week stretch before the monthlong August recess.
  • President Joe Biden begins the week in London, meeting with King Charles III and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
  • Biden’s European trip is centered on NATO meetings in Lithuania tomorrow and Wednesday and will conclude with meetings with Nordic leaders in Helsinki Thursday.

HOUSE

  • The House will vote tomorrow through Friday, taking up the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act.
  • The Financial Services Committee will hold a series of hearings on environmental, social and governance investing and the proxy advisory industry.
  • The Judiciary Committee is set for a politically charged week, with oversight appearances on tap by Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Wray Wednesday and Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan Thursday.

SENATE

  • The Senate will be in session throughout the week, continuing to vote on Biden nominees.
  • The Senate Armed Services Committee has scheduled two nomination hearings for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, including Air Force General Charles Brown to be chair, amid Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s hold on confirming military promotions.   
  • The Senate Permanent Select Committee on Investigations will hold a hearing titled “The PGA-LIV Deal: Implications for the Future of Golf and Saudi Arabia’s Influence in the United States.”

WHITE HOUSE

  • Biden is in London, meeting with King Charles and Prime Minister Sunak.
  • Tonight, the president will travel to Vilnius, Lithuania, to attend a NATO Summit and meet with other heads of state Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Thursday, Biden will attend a U.S.-Nordic Leaders’ Summit in Helsinki before returning to Washington.
