Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • The Senate will spend most or all of the week slogging through amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act, while the House begins floor votes on spending legislation, before Congress breaks on Friday until after Labor Day.
  • President Joe Biden will host Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House.
  • Biden will also establish a national monument to Emmett Till and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley.

HOUSE

  • The House will be in session tomorrow through Friday, taking up the first two of 12 annual appropriations bills.  
  • The House Judiciary Committee will hold an oversight hearing with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Wednesday.
  • Also Wednesday, the House Oversight Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs will hold a hearing on unidentified anomalous phenomena.

SENATE

  • The Senate will be in session Tuesday through Thursday, working on the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act.  
  • The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law will hold a hearing tomorrow on principles for the regulation of artificial intelligence.
  • Wednesday, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing on permitting reform.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Biden tomorrow will sign a proclamation establishing the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument across three sites in Chicago and Mississippi.
  • Thursday, the president will host Italian Prime Minister Meloni at the White House.
  • Friday, Biden will travel to Maine to discuss Bidenomics.
