Current research indicates that patent trolls are now bringing the majority of U.S. Patent lawsuits. According to a study by Professor Colleen Chien of Santa Clara University, 61% of all lawsuits filed through December 1, 2012 were filed by trolls. That is up from 45% in 2011 and only 23% five years ago. Troll lawsuits are increasingly targeting startup firms.
