The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) issued citations to a Plainville, Connecticut construction contractor for alleged violations related to the demolition of a mercury boiler.
Manafort Brothers, Inc. (“MBI”) allegedly exposed workers to mercury and respirator hazards while the boiler was dismantled.
An OSHA inspection allegedly determined that MBI did not undertake steps to reduce mercury exposure to below permissible levels. Further, OSHA alleges the company did not evaluate the respirator program’s effectiveness in protecting workers against exposures nor consult with the employees to identify and correct any respirator problems.
OSHA proposes a penalty assessment of $329,548.
MBI has 15 days from receipt of its citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director, or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
