What Caused the Ameriprise Financial Data Breach?

The Ameriprise Financial data breach was only recently announced, and more information is expected in the near future. However, Ameriprise’s filing with the Attorney General of Massachusetts provides little information on what led up to the breach. According to this source, Ameriprise recently learned that an unauthorized party may have been able to access confidential consumer information that had been entrusted to the company.

In response, Ameriprise conducted an investigation and took steps to protect all affected accounts from unauthorized activity. Ultimately, the Ameriprise investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party was able to access certain files containing confidential consumer information.

After learning that sensitive consumer data was accessible to an unauthorized party, Ameriprise Financial reviewed the compromised files to determine what information was leaked and which consumers were impacted. While the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, Social Security number, account number, date of birth and address.

On January 12, 2024, Ameriprise Financial sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information belonging to them was compromised.
