Democratic AGs Lend Unwavering Support to Efforts to Waive or Reduce Student Debt

  • A coalition of 19 Democratic AGs is calling on the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to move quickly to implement its proposed regulations that would waive or reduce student loan repayment for certain groups of federal student loan borrowers.
  • ED’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) issued in April 2024 proposes to give ED the discretion to waive part or all of a borrower’s debt in certain circumstances, such as where their debt exceeds the amount originally borrowed, who have been in repayment for more than two decades, or who attended institutions that lost Title IV eligibility or were otherwise determined by ED to not provide adequate financial value to students, among others.
  • The AGs urge ED to implement the proposed regulation expeditiously. The comment period for the NPRM closed on May 17th.
