While the European Parliament and European Commission look to finalize the EU Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act, many are interested to see how its relationship with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will play out, as well as how such regulations may impact the international data privacy landscape. We previously previewed recent transatlantic developments in AI regulation; however, as 2024 continues on, so does the conversation.
In his article AI and Data Privacy, Dr. Axel Spies writes specifically about the lack of regulation on AI in the current GDPR, and on Germany’s potential influence on international policy and forums to discuss AI and data privacy. Meanwhile, the EU institution is in the process of adopting the AI Act—a lengthy document. The European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research, and Energy and Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice, and Home Affairs will meet and vote to sign off on the legislation on February 13, with a vote by the entire European Parliament expected in March or April.
