NEXT Energy Technologies Inc. has received $3 million in funding under the California Energy Commission’s Realizing Accelerated Manufacturing and Production for Clean Energy Technologies program, to be applied toward NEXT’s development of a proprietary transparent photovoltaic coating for commercial windows. NEXT says the grant will enable the company to accelerate its development and commercialization.
Over 400 U.S. solar companies have sent a letter to Congress advising against the repeal of President Joe Biden’s two-year waiver on solar import tariffs, led by trade body the Solar Energy Industries Association. The group argues that repealing the waiver, which is currently set to run until 2024, would see U.S. solar companies incur over $1 billion in retroactive duties paid on imports for 2022-23 and cause the cancellation of around 4 GW of planned projects this year.
The average cost of North American power purchase agreements, or PPAs, rose 6.6% during the first quarter of 2023 in the face of unrelenting demand for clean energy, according to a new report from LevelTen Energy. Solar PPA prices are up 8.5% since the end of 2022. Wind prices rose 4.9% during the same time period after falling slightly in the fourth quarter of last year — a drop LevelTen hoped was a sign that the Inflation Reduction (IRA) had helped relieve market instability.
County commissioners have rescinded Ormat Technologies’ permit to drill exploratory wells for a geothermal project in the Nevada desert near the site of the annual Burning Man festival north of Reno. The Washoe County Commission voted 3-2 this week to overturn the permit that the county’s Board of Adjustment approved in January to allow for the drilling of up to 13 geothermal test wells in the area near Gerlach. Opponents of the project say it could jeopardize the town’s water supply and detract from the remote area’s natural beauty.
As one of the first public agencies nationwide to utilize newly expanded federal renewable energy incentives, Peninsula Clean Energy has reached agreements with nine cities and the County of San Mateo to install solar and future battery storage on public buildings. Peninsula Clean Energy is executing 20-year power purchase agreements to install 1.7 MW of solar power on 12 public buildings in San Mateo County and the City of Los Banos.
Avangrid and the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority signed a memorandum of understanding last week to jointly explore opportunities for developing up to 1 GW of solar, wind, and back-up battery storage on the reservation. Once built, that would constitute enough generation to supply clean energy to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses, both on the reservation, and in regional markets through export to surrounding states, according to the partners.
Governor Jay Inslee has approved two Yakima County solar projects from California-based developer Cypress Creek Renewables. Inslee said the two 80 MW projects will each provide power for 15,000 homes. The projects are among six solar farm proposals which have either been submitted or approved in the eastern portion of Yakima County or just across its border in Benton County.
