Sysco Corporation Experiences Cybersecurity Event Leading to Data Breach

On May 3, 2023, Sysco Corporation began to inform employees about a data breach stemming from a recent cyberattack. Based on the company’s preliminary reports, the incident resulted in an unauthorized party gaining access to employees’ names, Social Security numbers, addresses and other personal information. After confirming that consumer data was leaked, Sysco began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals who were impacted by the recent data security incident.

What We Know So Far About the Sysco Corp. Breach

News of the Sysco Corp. data breach is still fresh; however, what we know at this point comes from the company’s filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission as well as a letter that the company sent to employees discussing the breach. According to these sources, on March 5, 2023, Sysco detected a cybersecurity event affecting the company’s computer network. In response, Sysco launched an investigation to learn more about the nature and scope of the attack and whether any consumer or employee data was leaked as a result.

The Sysco investigation is ongoing; however, the company has released some information. For example, a Sysco representative explained that the unauthorized party responsible for the attack was able to remove certain data from the company’s servers, including information related to the “operation of its business, customers, employees and personal data.” While the exact type of information that was leaked likely varies by individual, Sysco notes that the affected data types included employees’ names, Social Security numbers, addresses and other personal information.

On May 3, 2022, Sysco Corp. sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised as a result of the recent data security incident.
