Below is this week’s congressional update by BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team. We’ll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

•  Congress returns from its Independence Day recess for a legislative blitz as leaders press forward on a bipartisan infrastructure bill and a separate partisan package that Democrats expect will include trillions of dollars of President Joe Biden’s tax and other spending priorities.

•  Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell will appear before committees in both chambers to deliver the Fed’s semiannual report to Congress.

•  Biden will host Angela Merkel at the White House, likely her final visit after 16 years as chancellor of Germany.

HOUSE

  • The House is in a committee work week. No floor votes are planned.
  • The House Appropriations Committee will mark up eight annual funding bills throughout the week.
  • The Financial Services Committee will hold a Wednesday hearing with Powell on monetary policy and the state of the economy.

SENATE

  • The Senate plans to continue working on confirming Biden’s nominees.
  • The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will receive a closed briefing on J.Res. 10, to repeal the authorizations for use of military force against Iraq, and will discuss recent U.S. military strikes in Iraq and Syria.
  • The Senate Banking Committee on Thursday will receive Powell’s semiannual monetary policy report.

WHITE HOUSE

  • Biden will lead a meeting today with law enforcement and local leaders to discuss strategies to address increases in violent crime. Eric Adams, a retired police officer and favorite to be elected as New York City’s next mayor, is among the meeting attendees.
  • Biden on Tuesday will travel to Philadelphia to speak on voting rights.
  • Biden will host Merkel on Thursday.
