• Following a dramatic uptick in consumer complaints, the office of Iowa AG Tom Miller has launched an investigation into allegations of fraudulent sales and installation practices of approximately 15 solar companies, many of which are from outside the state. From 2019 to 2021, 15 complaints were received by the AG’s Consumer Protection Division. In 2022, there have been 40 complaints.
• Many include complaints about misleading advertisements claiming that the installation of solar panels will automatically result in a solar tax credit, when in fact, in 2021 the Iowa legislature adjourned for the year without extending Iowa’s solar tax credit, opening up the possibility that consumers will not obtain the tax credit. Other complaints include late or improper installations, defective solar panels, and property damage at the time of installation.
• Due to the number of companies that are out of state, the Iowa AG office will also be working with AG offices in other states.
