A successful legal career has always been a dream of many young graduates. However, these career aspirations have seemed to be dwindling. A 2023 survey by Major Lindsey & Africa has uncovered a noteworthy shift among Gen Z, with less than 40% expressing a desire to join the largest U.S. law firms—a substantial decrease from nearly 60% just three years ago.

The recent Supreme Court ruling in June 2023, barring the use of race in college admissions, adds a layer of complexity to the challenges faced by the legal industry. It is anticipated to impact the attraction of top law graduates, potentially further diminishing the Gen-Z attorney talent pool that fuels the industry.

Many factors are influencing this diminishing interest in Big Law careers. Some areas that law firms, especially Big Law need to continue to build and expand on include:

  1. Diversity and Inclusion

Gen Z is renowned for its commitment to diversity and inclusion. Recognizing that diverse teams drive innovation and better performance, law firms must continue to build and tailor their diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to align with the perspectives of young attorneys. This approach fosters a more representative and inclusive legal community.

  1. Navigating Technological Advancements

As the first generation to grow up in the digital age, Gen Z's comfort with technology provides valuable insights into leveraging digital tools in legal research, communication, and case management. Law firms that embrace technology are positioned to remain competitive, making it essential to understand and integrate Gen Z's preferences for streamlined processes and enhanced efficiency.

  1. Shaping Law Firm Culture

Law firm culture significantly influences the satisfaction and retention of attorneys. Positive workplace cultures correlate with higher productivity and engagement. Gen Z attorneys bring unique expectations, emphasizing work-life balance, mentorship, and collaborative work environments. Surveying them enables law firms to align their cultures with the desires of the new generation, fostering positive and supportive workplaces.

  1. Addressing Career Aspirations

Gen Z attorneys have distinct career aspirations influenced by their values and the socio-economic landscape. Recognizing that career advancement opportunities impact employee satisfaction, law firms can develop mentorship programs, career advancement opportunities, and training initiatives tailored to the expectations of this emerging generation.

  1. Enhancing Legal Education

The legal education system plays a pivotal role in preparing aspiring attorneys for the challenges of legal practice. Recognizing the growing need for legal education reform, insights from Gen Z attorneys can guide refinements in legal education programs, ensuring graduates are well-equipped for the complexities of modern legal practice.

  1. Fostering Innovation

Gen Z is synonymous with innovation and a desire for positive change. Surveying these attorneys provides an opportunity to tap into their innovative thinking, encouraging the legal industry to embrace progressive ideas and approaches. This collaboration can lead to the development of new legal services, business models, and strategies that propel the industry forward.

Join the Conversation, Shape the Future

In this era of rapid change, understanding the experiences, aspirations, and challenges Gen Z attorneys face remains crucial. Law firms need to do more to ensure they have a strong talent pool of young associates who are interested and can be mentored to take on the partner role. To address other critical questions, Leopard Solutions and Major Lindsey & Africa have partnered to conduct the 2024 survey exclusively for Gen Z attorneys. Gen Z associates are invited to participate to share their unique experiences and perspectives.

The survey results will be presented at a Major Lindsey & Africa-sponsored breakfast during the 2024 NALP Conference. The deadline to complete the survey is February 16, 2024.
